How to Establish a Daily Dhikr Practice

June 29, 2026 2 min read 0

Remembrance of Allah is the foundation of the spiritual life. Here is a practical guide to building a consistent dhikr routine, even within a busy schedule.

What is Dhikr?

Dhikr (Arabic: ذكر) refers to the remembrance of Allah through words, phrases, and supplications. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Shall I tell you the best of your deeds, the most pure in the sight of your King, which does most to raise your ranks, which is better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy and striking the necks of one another?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “Remembrance of Allah.” (Ibn Majah)

Starting Small and Building Consistency

The key to establishing any spiritual practice is to begin with what is manageable. Our Prophet ﷺ loved deeds that are consistent, even if they are small. A morning and evening routine of just ten minutes can transform your relationship with Allah over time.

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small.” — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Bukhari & Muslim)

A Simple Daily Routine

Here is a beginner-friendly dhikr schedule you can begin today:

  • Morning (Fajr) — Recite Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar 33 times each.
  • After each prayer — Same 33-33-33 sequence, completing with Lā ilāha illā-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah.
  • Evening (Maghrib) — Read the evening adhkar from a reliable collection such as Hisnul Muslim.

Making it a Habit

Attach your dhikr to existing habits — your morning coffee, your commute, or before sleeping. The brain forms habits through repetition tied to contextual cues. When dhikr becomes as natural as breathing, you will find your heart in a constant state of awareness of Allah.

May Allah make it easy for us all to remember Him abundantly, and may He place blessing in our time and in our deeds. Ameen.
